Vintage KNOLL cast aluminum dining table (base) by Richard Schultz for the famous 1966 Collection.
This is the base only—the table top is missing, though could be replaced by Knoll, or you could also cut a sheet of acrylic to fit the inset, or cut a wooden top to fit in for an updated wood and aluminum look. The size of the inset is 26" X 26"; the original design allows for a channel between the aluminum frame and the table top to allow for water to drain instead of pooling. The original tops are enameled metal and screw into the base from the bottom. I fee that a sheet of plastic, or wood, or sheet metal could easily update this table and you would have a stunning iconic piece with some personality.
38″ × 38″ X 26" height; the space inside the frame for the top is 26″ × 26″
I visited the Schultz studio years ago, and at that time they sold replacement parts. Shultz’s son runs the business now, and he is easy to access through tour website.
There are no markings on the table for maker, though I am 100% sure this is original; I have had it for 20 years and it was vintage then. I am pretty sure nobody ever knocked off Schultz—the process for making this cast aluminum table is not easy, and it is not easily duplicated.
The 1966 Collection continues to be a bestseller at Knoll, a tribute to the iconic timeless design.
This table currently sells for more than 2K. This one is a great deal. Perfect for your Hamptons house, or your Brooklyn backyard.
The surface shows some wear, but overall it’s in great shape. It was painted a light coat of primer, not by me, but you can easily refinish the metal. The table top sets into the table top (see images) and was designed to allow water to drain theough the perimeter channel so there would be no pooling. Nice touch.
Pickup is on Wallabout Street near the Navy Yard in Brooklyn at my storage unit. It is available for pickup during business hours, weekdays preferably. It is very lightweight and you could carry it easily, or put it into a mini van easily.
