Antique Illinois Central railroad wood chest
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a rare and totally charming Illinois Central railroad wood chest. (The IC was incorporated in 1836 and became the longest railroad in the world upon its completion in 1856.) This chest measures approximately 18.5" across x 17.5" deep and 13" tall (including the wooden "feet" on the base.) I believe it dates to around the 1920s.
The crate retains much of its original green paint as well as the Illinois Central metal plate on the front. The hardware, including the nails, side handles and hinges, also look original. The crate does show wear commensurate with age including some splits in the wood. The paint is wonderfully chippy and the previous owner gave it a light coat of sealer so it is now stable. I believe she also put a sealant on the inside to make the interior usable. The colors and the warm tone of the wood are perfection! (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
I recently bought this box at the Alameda antique market and loved it so much that I had every intention of keeping it. Unfortunately I just don't have the space for it so I'm reluctantly letting it go!
