Tiggy & Pip is a vintage home décor shop by mother and son décor and interior design loving duo, Tiggy and Pip Coudray.
With a shared love of all things French and vintage we opened our shop in 2011.
Based in France, between Cognac and La Rochelle, we source unusual items from recent French and European history. Everyday French household items from the 1880's to 1980's which, although at one time were plentiful, are now increasingly rare and collectible. We source specialist props for films/photo shoots and interior designers. Many of our 'finds' are currently on display in a number of top New York restaurants and Hollywood apartments.
This is a fabulous vintage 'Dopff & Irion' Vin D'Alsace' ice bucket /wine cooler from the 1970's.
Now iconic and very collectible these ice buckets were a promotional item, never for sale to the general public, given to restaurants, bars and bistros all over France to promote this brand of Vin D'Alsace Crémants and Grand Crus, a popular Champagne alternative.
The front and back of this bucket bears the famous, and instantly recognizable, 'Dopff & Irion, Vin D'Alsace, 68340 Riquewihr - France' logo.
Here's a bit of history for you.
The name Dopff has long been associated with the town of Riquewihr, which is classed one of the most beautiful villages of France. Riquewihr was a particularly active and flourishing city in the Middle Ages thanks to its renowned wines. Wines from Riquewihr were exported across the whole of northern Europe. At that time, the principal transport route was the nearby river Rhine. Over the generations, the Dopff and Irion families, whose interest in the vineyards can be traced back to the 16th century, developed and nurtured their precious heritage - the vines and the Chateau of Riquewihr. The original Chateau, constructed in 1549, which is now the headquarters of the estate, was owned by the Princes of Wurtemberg who ruled over the city and its region for five centuries. Today, Riquewihr is known as the "pearl of Alsace", and its sumptuous architecture and exceptional treasures testify to the splendour of its historic past.
This ice bucket is in excellent condition and, considering its age, there is very little damage to the metal. It has obviously seen some action in French bars and bistros over the years but is still in remarkably good condition. It has no major dents, just some scratches across the surface, consistent with use and some discoloration on the inside, from years of holding ice and water, but it has many, many years of service still to offer.
It has sturdy handles in an art deco inspired 'fan' design, making it easy to carry.
The bucket stands 25cms (9¾") tall and is tapered measuring 12.5cms (5") diameter at the bottom and 19.5cms (7¾") diameter at the top. It is lightweight at 300gms/10½ ozs.
I have left this bucket exactly as I found it, without cleaning it because I love the authentic patina of its vintage appearance.
