Antique seascape, circa 1900
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a large, antique seascape depicting waves breaking off a rocky coast and a cluster of sailing ships in the distance. The painting is an original oil on canvas and measures approximately 24" tall x 20" across. The artwork is signed Elizabeth Ostrander on the back of the canvas and appears to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. With a limited but gorgeous palette of blues, greens, brown and some mauve in the sky, the painter has done a masterful job of capturing the sounds and textures of the scene, from the giant frothing waves to the mist and spray partially obscuring a flock of gulls.
The painting is in good antique condition and shows very well. It has had some repairs. There are three very old patches on the back of the canvas and probably some corresponding touch up paint on the front (although it is virtually unnoticeable). The original paint is almost entirely intact and although the canvas has likely darkened over the years from surface dirt, the colors are still strong. There is wear to the paint around the edges where presumably there was once a frame and some crackling of the paint consistent with age. The wood stretcher is sturdy and ready to hang and some staples have been added along parts of the edge to further secure the canvas. (See photos for best idea of condition.)
This is altogether a very beautiful and evocative piece. Whether you chose to make the painting more formal by adding a frame or to display it as is, the artwork would make a great addition to any collection of antique or nautical paintings and a unique statement piece in a coastal home. It would also be a perfect gift for a sailor!
