Vintage dog bookends, terriers, bar decor
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a wonderful pair of terriers—a black Scottish Terrier and a white West Highland Terrier—originally used to advertise Black and White Whisky. Black and White is a blended Scotch whiskey originally produced by the London-based James Buchanan & Co which was founded in 1884. The now iconic branding featuring the two terriers was conceived by James Buchanan in the 1890s.
The dogs date to around the 1930s. They are made of cast Spelter, a zinc alloy that was used a lot in the early twentieth century, particularly for Art Deco figurines. The Scottie measures approximately 8" x 8" and the Westie is roughly 6.5" tall x 9" long. Originally, they would have been mounted together on a plinth and featured in a British pub where they would have inspired patrons to imbibe copious amounts of Black and White! If you look at the bottom of the dogs you can see the holes where they would have been secured to the stand.
Even though they are hollow, the terriers are quite heavy with the two of them weighing just under 5 lbs. They are both in good/fair condition, showing wear consistent with age and many nights spent in bars! They appear to have their original finish with a fair amount of paint loss and some rusting/corrosion (most noticeably around the feet). The weathered patina on the dogs is quite lovely and adds to their already enormous character! The Westie has a tiny hole on his right side and the Scottie has lost the plaster cap in his base. Other than that, I do not see any cracks, breaks or signs or repair. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
Overall these guys are charming period pieces with tons of attitude and decorative possibilities. They look lovely seated together as a pair and, because of their weight, the dogs can also be used as bookends or doorstops. They would make a unique gift for any dog lover, terrier owner, Whisky drinker, or collector of vintage advertising.
