A GongFucha tea ceremony wood, sculptured and mother of pearl inlaid tea table with tray.
Gong fu is a formal Chinese tea ceremony, albeit less so than Japanese chanoyu. Tea table is carved with the symbol of a fan and calligraphy. Brewing tray, or a deep, flat bottom plate to hold spills (spills are typical). Both Japanese tea ceremony and Chinese tea ceremony conform to the wisdom of oriental philosophy. Furthermore, Chinese tea ceremony reflects the central idea of Taoism, Confucian and Buddhism.
Wood: Table is made of “Chinese Chicken Wing” wood, popularly called jichimu, or “chicken-wing wood.” In botanical classifications the wood is of the Ormosia genus, indigenous to Hainan island, and is notably less dense than hardwoods.
Table is highly decorated with sculptured scrolls at the bottom facing the guests and also two butterflies inlaid with mother of pearl.
Provenance: Taiwan (formerly known as Formosa governed by Japan until 1945). Table belonged to a Japanese family living in Formosa/Taiwan during the Japanese occupation.
Dimensions: 19 inches long (48.25 cm); 11 inches wide (28 cm); 2.5 inches high (6.35 cm).
Very Good Condition for Age (80 years), Original Condition Unaltered, Some Imperfections (Some traces due to hot water spills during usage). Price adjusted accordingly.
