Antique still life with Chrysanthemums, floral art
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a beautiful antique floral still life featuring a collection of multi-colored Chrysanthemums. The painting is oil on a wood board and measures approximately 18" wide x 11.75" tall. The lively brushstrokes give the piece a nice texture and energy and the colors are simultaneously subtle but luminous. The flowers appear to burst forth from the dark grey/green background like fireworks from the sky!
The painting is not dated but I would estimate it to be from the late 1800s. This corresponds with the label on the back of the academy board from Frost & Adams. The artist supply company was established in Boston, MA in 1869. By the 1880s it was one of the leading sellers of art materials in New England, (bought out by the H.H. Sullivan Company around 1921).
Overall the painting is in good antique condition and shows very nicely. Most of the original paint is intact although there is wear to the edges and corners, as well as a few scuffs, scrapes, scratches and small areas of paint loss. Structurally the board remains solid with no cracks or repairs. (See photos for clearest understanding of condition.)
