Description

This is a charming antique sampler from England. In its frame, it measures approximately 20.5" tall and 14.5" wide with the actual needlework measuring 16.25" x 11.25". At the top of the sampler is the alphabet in uppercase letters, followed by a row of numbers. Beneath that are three rows of family initials followed by a lower case version of the alphabet and then large uppercase letter up to the letter "I". The lower part of the tapestry features a central floral urn with letters around it. There is also a lovely assortment of birds, flowers a heart, strawberry, a diamond and a small creature at the bottom that looks like a bit like a deer. At the very bottom of the sampler is a line of text. It is a little hard to read as the pink wool has faded to a cream color but you can make out "Anne Guthrie aged 12 Year 18." Although Anne only stitched the first two numbers of the year, the style of the stitching dates the sampler to the late nineteenth century (circa 1880 or slightly earlier). There is a red border around the whole piece as well as various decorative borders delineating the sections. The sampler is wool on gauze. It was neatly executed and is in good antique condition. I received it unframed and took pictures so you can see the piece without the glass. There is some discoloration and darkening of the gauze consistent with age, and the odd small stain but nothing distracting. The wool colors are still beautiful and strong and not terribly far from the original colors on the back of the sampler. The stitching looks completely intact and I do not see any signs of repair. The green/blue, distressed wood frame is new. I mounted the needlework on a bleach-free cotton backing using archival, acid-free fabric tape.
