1950s European painting of chefs in a kitchen
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a wonderful painting of two chefs preparing food in a kitchen. It is oil on board and measures approximately 12.5" x 9.5". The painting is from Kiev in the Ukraine and dates to around the 1950s. It is quite charming but also has historical relevance in that it speaks strongly to the era and environment in which it was created.
In the mid-1900s, when Ukraine was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, artists were instructed to paint exclusively in a style of realism known as socialist realism. The idea was to paint "reality" in shades of optimism that showed everyday workers purposefully and dutifully performing their tasks, thereby glorifying the socialist regime. No matter how you interpret the painting it is certainly an evocative piece. Using a limited palette of mostly warm browns and grays, the artist did a great job of conveying the heat and energy in the room with thick paint and expressive, textured brush strokes.
The painting is in good vintage condition. There are a few scattered chips/scrapes and wear to the corners and edges of the board but most of the original paint is intact and the colors are still strong. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
Altogether this is a very unique and attractive work of art. Whether you chose to display it as it is or to make it more formal by adding a frame, it would make a lovely addition to any kitchen, or to a collection of European, vintage or culinary artworks. It would also make a perfect gift for the chef or foodie in your life!
