Antique dog portrait in period frame, circa 1910
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a wonderful, large antique photo featuring a motley crew of scruffy terriers and maybe a shepherd or cattle dog too. The dogs are all perched atop a rocky "mount" and the dubious looks on their faces are priceless. I can only imagine the photo shoot! The portrait dates to around 1910 and could either be sepia tone or duotone. The gilt frame is of the same period, with lovely floral detailing in the corners and dark blue paint between the gold borders. The artwork measures approximately 20.5" across and 14.55" tall including the frame.
The photo and frame are in very good antique condition. The photo has one tear (about 0.75") coming off the left side (see last photo) but is otherwise completely intact with no stains or creases. The frame has surface wear consistent with age including some chips and scrapes (mostly along the edges and corners). The glass has a few small imperfections (see second to last photo) and the cardboard backing and hardware look like replacements.
This portrait would look great in a country home or cottage and would make a sweet and amusing addition to any collection of vintage photos or dog portraits. It would also make a unique gift for any dog lover, particularly the owner of a terrier!
