This well painted oil on canvas framed and linen lined landscape is of two geese landing on a lake at Mendon Pond Park. The park is outside of Rochester New York. It bears a date of 1985, as well as the artists label, on the back. It measures 24" X 20". It is in excellent condition.
John W Wagner (1925- ) is a New York painter who paints primarily on location (plein air) New York State landscapes and East Coast seascapes (Massachusetts and Maine). He has completed many commissioned portraits in oil and pastel.
He studied at the Art Students League (NYC), Art Career School (NYC) and graduated with a degree in art from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Privately, he studied with both Carl Peters (1897-1980), Jack Callahan (1911-1983) and Everett Raymond Kinstler (1926- ).
He is a member of NYC's prestigious art society the Salmagundi Club, a former president of the Penfield (NY) Art Association, a former board member of the Rochester (NY) Art Club, a member of the Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier (Vestal, NY) and a former member of the Portrait Club of New York and a former associate of the Pastel Society of America.
He has displayed consecutively in the Salmagundi Club Spring and Fall Shows/Auctions in the years 2002-2008 as well as receiving its John Lafarge Award for his work "Pemaquid Harbor", NC Wyeth award for his "Portland Harbor" and RAC Staudenmeier Award for his "Africa's Tomorrow". He also has displayed at the Rochester Art Club and the Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier.
His painting of Colonel Patrick O'Rorke and the 140th NYS regiment at Gettysburg is on exhibition at St John Fisher College (Rochester, NY).
He is or was represented by the Fore Street Gallery (Portland, Maine), Anne M Holahan Fine Arts (Victor, NY), Gallery Village Art Studio (Hannibal NY), Woodmansee Gallery, (Skancateles, NY)and the Kingslea Gallery (Pittsford, NY).
The painting is wonderfully done. It would be a beautiful and welcome addition to any collection of fine art, bound to appreciate in the years to come.
