Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a Goldeneye, wooden duck decoy from New York state. It measures approximately 13" long x 6.25" tall x 5" wide. It is hand carved, circa 1920, and has some particularly interesting features such as the chiseled outlines of the wings, the unique notches under the tail, and the details on the beak. The coloring is also particularly nice on this bird with the mottled grey, black and white of the body set off by the brilliant amber of the glass eyes.
The decoy is in fair/good antique condition, showing wear commensurate with age and a lot of use! This includes paint loss, chipping and crackling. There are also some gouges, birdshot holes, small splits in the base, and some surface cracks on the back of the head and base of the neck. The overall patina is quite lovely with its combination of muted colors, bare wood and lots of texture. Structurally the decoy is very solid. The neck is firmly attached and the bird still has its original hardware and weight on the bottom. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
In general, this decoy has worn beautifully to become a primitive perfection with great form and a perfectly imperfect finish. It would make a fine addition to any decoy collection, a great gift for a hunter, and a charming decorative accent in a country home or cabin.
