Pair of antique, cast iron dog bookends c1925
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a lovely pair of antique cast iron bookends from the Hubley Manufacturing Company. The company was founded by John Hubley in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1894 and produced a wide variety of toys, doorstops, money banks and bookends, which have since become highly collectible.
These particular bookends feature a Scottish Terrier and a Wire Haired Fox Terrier. The set was called "Pals" and dates to 1925. Each bookend measures approximately 5.5" tall x 5.25" across and 2.5" deep and together they weigh almost 7lbs! The production number 280 is embossed on the backs of the bookends near the base.
Hubley made a fair number of this model of bookends but most of them were manufactured with a monochrome finish. What makes these ones so special is that they are a rare polychrome variety—painted first with a bronze finish and then given multi-colored painted detailing and realistic shading. The casting is also beautifully textured so that you can make out the grass on the bottom, for example, and the rough coats on the dogs.
The bookends are in very good antique condition and retain almost all of their original paint. They do show some wear consistent with age and use including scuffs, scratches, some paint crackling and a few chips on the protruding ear of one of the Fox Terriers. There is probably some surface dirt and some darkening of the original colors. One of the bookends has some rust on the base. Structurally the bookends are very solid with no sign of breaks, cracks or repairs. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
This set would make a distinctive and handsome addition to any collection of antique dogs or bookends. The bookends would look great with a stack of vintage books or facing forward on a shelf or table as decorative objects. They would also make a unique gift for any dog lover or terrier owner!
