Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a wonderful, old duck decoy from around the 1930s. It is made of solid, hand-carved wood, and measures approximately 16.25" long (including the beak) x 7.25 " tall. The ridged surface has developed a beautifully weathered, and feathery-looking patina with lots of texture and soft, overlapping shades of brown, charcoal and cream. The duck's head is removable and can be rotated on a square peg so that the bird can face to the front or sides.
The decoy has certainly been put to work over the years and does show wear commensurate with age and use. This includes scrapes, chips, gouges, pellet wounds and scattered paint loss especially on the beak, the top of the head and the edges of the tail. There are also some tight surface cracks on the duck's back. What remains of the paint appears to be original although there may have been some working touchups long ago. The duck retains both of his original glass eyes as well as his weight on the base. Structurally the bird is very solid and I don't see any signs of repair. Because of the ballast, the duck does tilt to one side but this can easily be remedied by placing a pencil under the bird. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
Overall this is a charming display piece with great character and lovely form. It would make a great addition to any cabin, rustic abode, or decoy collection.
