A vintage painting signed by the artist of the USS Manta, the first submarine and second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the manta. The Manta (SS-299) was commissioned in 1944. Upon completion of her shakedown cruise, Manta departed New London, Connecticut in 1945 for Hawaii via the Panama Canal. She sailed from Pearl Harbor in 1945 for her first war patrol, off the Kurile Islands.
Declared as excess to the needs of the Navy in 1967, she was struck from the Navy List and sunk as an aircraft target off Hampton, VA., 16 July 1969.
