Vintage Art Deco Fox Terrier Bookends
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a wonderful pair of Wirehaired Fox Terrier bookends. Each one measures approximately 5" tall x 3.5" wide x 3.5" deep including the base. They are Art Deco in style and date to circa 1930. They are not that heavy ( weighing just over 0.5 lbs each) so either they are hollow or they are made from a light metal.
The casting is quite detailed, as is the paintwork—mostly cream with brown accents on the heads and backs, touches of red and gold in the collars, and green for the bases. I love the character of these two terriers and the expressions on their faces. They look like they are taking their jobs very seriously with no time for any nonsense!
The bookends are in fair condition. They retain a good deal of their original paint but do show wear consistent with age and use. There are many chips in the paint (especially on protruding areas such as the nose and ears) and one dog has some tiny cracks at the back of the neck and below the chest area. The bases show oxidation and a very small amount of rust, and no longer lie completely flat. In general, though, the bookends are quite solid and I don't see any signs of repair or repainting. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
The bookends are still perfectly usable although they do tip back a little with the weight of the books. The terriers are also wonderful decorative objects and would be great additions to any collection of vintage or antique bookends or dogs. I have to say they are very unique. I did quite a bit of research on the pair in an attempt to find out who might have made them but found absolutely nothing like them!
