Antique oil painting of horse and dog, circa 1900
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a totally delightful antique painting of a horse and Pointer dog standing together in a pasture. The artwork is oil on canvas and measures approximately 24" across x 15.5" tall. It was found at an estate in central Pennsylvania and appears to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. I love the relationship between the two animals, both depicted in a style which is slightly naive and perfectly captures the personality of the breeds.
Overall the painting shows well but it does have a good deal of damage. Most of the original paint remains but there are many scrapes, scuffs, chips (some quite large) and one tear (which I sealed on the back of the canvas with acid-free art tape). There is also paint loss around the edges of the canvas where presumably there was once a frame. The paint has likely darkened over the years from the elements and surface dirt but the colors are still strong. It looks like at some point someone went in and painted in the chipped areas in the horse but the rest of the canvas seems untouched. The wood stretcher is still solid and strong. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
I think this painting is enchanting just as it is but it could also be restored and/or framed for a more formal effect. Either way, it would make a wonderful piece for display and a sweet addition to any collection of antique, horse, or dog paintings. The painting could probably benefit from some kind of sealant that would minimize any further chipping but I wanted to leave this up to the buyer.
