Serving up a Sundry Cache of 20th Century Forms for Madly Modern LifeStyling
This splendid mid century example of a traditional Chinese shoe cabinet is a beauty; Hand made, expertly 'japanned', & dynamically hand painted in a lotus & poppy blossom motif. Vibrant & elegant saturated colors resonate depth in contrast to the blackground of this circa '60s Chinese export piece. In excellent, original condition, the classic, minimal form is sound & of high quality. Completely hand-decorated on the front, sides & top with variegated blossoms & Chinese Meander/Greek Key details, the back side displays wonderfully black japanned finish without hand painted decoration.
Two front doors open to a fully black 'japanned' lacquer interior with one fixed, central shelf. Wonderfully-patinated brass hardware is applied throughout; split medallion & pin closure, hanging pulls, hinges, & minimal, square ferrules at the feet.
This is a quite unusual & appealing piece with tremendous versatility. It works across so many placements & utilities, & adds smart & strong design/decor impact to every one.
With nominal evidence of its age/use/wear or detractions, this fantastic 2 door cabinet is a scarce & wonderful piece.
