This framed airbrushed watercolor on paper Art Deco stylized still life measures 20" Tall X 16" Wide. It was painted for Newman Decor Inc (19 West 24th Street, NY, NY) sometime in the late 1930's or early 1940's. The firm was a high end home furnishings and art framing firm that operated from the 1930's through at least to the 1960's (by 1992 it had been dissolved. The firm also may have operated under the name The Bernard Picture Company). The painting is in very fine condition.
The "Harris" signature is most often associated with a husband and wife art team of Benjamin R. Harris (1904-1957) and Georgette Harris operating under the nome de brasse of Benjamin Jorj Harris.
Benjamin R. Harris (a relative of famed writer Joel Chandler Harris) was born in Albany, Georgia. He eventually made his way north, married and settled in New Rochelle, NY. A self described Renaissance man, besides being an artist he was also an engraver, architect and photographer.
Georgette Harris, a graduate of Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, NY). was a newspaper reporter, writer and cartoonist. She also taught airbrush art at the College of New Rochelle before being named Art Director of Warner Bros. music publishing division.
Together the team produced sheet music cover art, covers for national magazines (Colliers was one) and ad layouts for clients like Pabst Beer, Hiram Walker, Standard Brands, Dr. Pepper and A&P supermarkets. In 1947 they published a how-to instruction book, “Airbrush Illustration”.
They were two of several artists that Newman Decor employed to paint original artworks guaranteed to match the firm's furniture and fabrics.
"Benjamin Jorj Harris" is listed in Davenports, Artprice, Askart, Artfact, Artnet and Findartinfo.
