Description

This is a framed and lined oil on canvas board landscape. It measures 36 1/8" long by 24 1/8" wide. Outer frame dimension is 41 1/2" X 31 3/4". It appears to date from the 1970's or 1980's. It is in extremely fine condition. On the reverse is a label that reads: "Framed by Framart, Picture Framers, 95 Hope Street, Cape Town, South Africa, Phone 452319, Stockists of artist materials, frames and prints." Donald James Madge (1920-1997) was born in Stutterheim, Cape Province, South Africa.. He was a painter and graphic artist of landscapes, seascapes, portraits and still lifes. He worked in pastel, oil, watercolor, ink, pencil, charcoal and in various graphic media, particularly monotypes. He studied at Witwatersrand Technical College, under James Gardner from 1937-1940. He lived in Pretoria from 1947-60 and in Cape Town from 1960 until his death. Has traveled extensively throughout South Africa. He was the father of painter James Madge (1963-2007). He participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and in Australia. He also had at least 24 solo and touring exhibitions throughout the British Commonwealth (England and Wales). To list a few: 1947 Kimberley South Africa, 1959 Durban Art Gallery, joint exhibition (with Errol Boyley (1918-2007) and WH Coetzer (1900-1983)), 1968 Durban Art Gallery, (solo exhibition). He has work in the Baltimore Museum of Art (MD) and Blenheim Palace (Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England). . He was represented by Durban Art Gallery; Pretoria Art Museum; Queenstown Art Gallery; William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley.
