This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded beige/cream tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There are books here that study French Literature by all of France's famous writers, such as Racine, Corneille, Voltaire, Molière, Descartes, Alexandre Dumas, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Victor Hugo to add an extra 'French chic' to your collection!
I found them in an antique book fair in Paris and fell in love with them.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.
The five books are all paperback editions, distressed from years of genuine use, the covers are very faded, and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
Morceaux Choisis de Victor Hugo, Poésie. (1919 edition.) Victor Hugo (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. Hugo is considered to be one of the greatest and best-known French writers. This book is a selection of his poetry.
La Littérature Française Contemporaine, étudiée dans les textes (De 1850 à nos jours.) Marcel Braunschvig (1947 edition.) Studies of contemporary, French, literature with the works of Baudelaire, Paul Claudel, Alphonse Daudet, Gustave Flaubert and Emile Zola to name but a few!
Notre Littérature Etudiée Dans Les Textes, Tome I, Des Origines à la Fin du XVIIe Siècle. Marcel Braunschvig (1947 edition.) A wonderful book that studies works by all the famous French authors up until the 17th century, such as Corneille, Racine, Molière, Boileau, La Fontaine, Balzac and Descartes and many more!
Notre Littérature Etudiée Dans Les Textes, Tome II, Le XVIIIé et le XIXe Siècle. Marcel Braunschvig (1955 edition.) This is the second volume of studies of French literature, from 18th century onwards. Works by Montesquieu, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Vigny, Alfred de Musset, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire are among the writings studied and analyzed in this book.
Grammaire Larousse du XXe Siècle (1936 edition.) An amazing book, packed full of language exercises, analysis and verb conjugations for the study of French grammar in the 20th century. The motto of Pierre Larousse, the namesake of Les Editions Larousse, and perpetuated in Larousse's publications is "Je sème à tout vent" ("I sow to all winds") and this logo appears on the books cover.
If you would like to display the books in a flat bundle, tied up with twine, then you would need a minimum space of 16cms/ 6¼" high x 20cms/ 7¾" long x 14cms/ 5½" deep.
They weigh 2.3kgs/ 5lbs.
