Tiggy & Pip is a vintage home décor shop by mother and son décor and interior design loving duo, Tiggy and Pip Coudray.
With a shared love of all things French and vintage we opened our shop in 2011.
Based in France, between Cognac and La Rochelle, we source unusual items from recent French and European history. Everyday French household items from the 1880's to 1980's which, although at one time were plentiful, are now increasingly rare and collectible. We source specialist props for films/photo shoots and interior designers. Many of our 'finds' are currently on display in a number of top New York restaurants and Hollywood apartments.
This is a huge Bayeux Tapestry replica panel. Ideal for wall hanging, made in France. This panel is scene 51 where William, Duke of Normandy, 'exhorts his men to fight heroically'. It is to scale and accurate to the original.
We do not know who has painstakingly hand embroidered this remarkably excerpt from the masterpiece, or when exactly it was done. What we can say, though, is that it faithfully reproduces the details of the original, including the elaborate crewelwork stitching, embroidered using wool. Just look at the exceptional skill that has gone into sewing of the chain mail! Crewel embroidery, or crewelwork, is a type of surface embroidery using wool. The technique, like the original Bayeux Tapestry itself, is at least a thousand years old.
The scene depicts Williams knights on horseback advancing into battle with spears. The full Latin "titulus", describing the scene reads as follows: "HIC VVILLELM : DVX ALLOQVITVR : SVIS : MILITIBVS : VT : PREPARARENT SE : VI RILITER ET SAPIENTER : ADPRELIVM : CONTRA : ANGLORVM EXERCITŨ : (Here Duke William harangued his soldiers to prepare with courage and wisdom for battle against the British army.)
The panel is large measuring 106cms/ 41" (3½ feet) x 62cms/ 24½" (2 feet) and is in great condition. The linen does have some age spots and has browned with age, which actually adds to the authenticity, making it even more true to the original. It is being sold as a piece of fabric, unframed.
We have photographed it upright so you can see it's potential as a wall hanging.
Here's a bit of history for you:
The Bayeux tapestry is a band of linen 231 feet (70 metres) long and 19 ½ inches (49.5 cm) wide, now light brown with age, on which are embroidered, in worsted's of eight colors and with crewel stitching, more than 70 scenes representing the Norman Conquest. The tapestry's protagonists are William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex (later, the short-lived King of England.) The work culminates with the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It has survived intact for over nine centuries.
The tapestry shows the first known depiction of Halley's Comet. It is displayed in Bayeux today and is one of the greatest treasures of the French nation.
A wonderful piece of history for your home.
