Original red 1940s Crown birdcage with deco design
Hummingbear Vintage features unique (often whimsical) vintage and antique decorative items from various parts of the world.
This is a delightful red Crown birdcage from the 1940s. Unlike many of these Crown Parakeet cages that are sold with a repaint, this one is in its completely original condition with lots of rustic charm. The metal cage measures approximately 15" tall x 14" wide and 9.5" deep. It has an art deco chrome door featuring the CROWN name, two original wood perches (one fixed and one swinging), and a handle at the top. The lower portion of the cage has mesh netting with openings on the sides. I believe the opening with the stretched out bars once contained a feeder.
The cage has clearly been enjoyed by many a bird over the years and does show wear consistent with age and use. This includes scattered paint loss/chips, a good deal of rust especially on the red base and bottom tray, surface dirt and vintage bird debris! You can still remove the bottom tray but it does have some dings and bends which make it a bit sticky. The cage door is spring loaded and works very well. (See photos for best understanding of condition.)
Overall this is a wonderful accent piece with lots of decorative possibilities. It would go particularly well in a cabin, cottage or country home and can be displayed as is or filled with small plants or other ornaments. (The two birds featured in the photos were just models for the day and do not come with the cage!).
