On Apartment Therapy
Country mouse gives birth to city mouse. West Elm was born a few years ago by the people at Pottery Barn, which is in turn owned by the people at Williams-Sonoma. The reason for the birth? No one had designed furniture for us New Yorkers, who all need smaller, more chic furniture than their suburban counterparts. Now into their third full season, West Elm is "classy", "much cooler than most of the stores", and has "affordable prices" (reporter GD). Indeed. Though a little stuck in last year's heavy Java wood style, the Elm has great prices that will please a student or someone looking to quickly furnish a whole apartment. Of particular note are their simple wood bedframes ($230 for queen), wood block table ($499) which makes a great desk, and super useful rolling storage shelves ($499). To repeat, the Elm is a great resource that, like IKEA, should not be used too heavily. Online, with a new store in Brooklyn. MGR

hands down one of the worst retail experiences of my life. I purchased a couch and a chaise the end of July and was told 8 weeks (special order). I called a few weeks in to check the status and was told 12 weeks. Huh?!?! The operator said she'd get accurate timing and call me back, she never did. A few weeks later I received an email stating that the item shipped. Yay! 2 days later I opened the mail to find a letter informing me that my furniture is on back order and there will be a delay in shipping. ?? I called to find out that there was no shipping issue, the item shipped and it may take 4 weeks to ship from SE U.S. to NY. That's crazy. 4 weeks went by and I still can't find anyone to tell me about my couch other than that they're sorry and will call me. Ugh! In addition, it's taken so long that my West Elm credit card statement is past due for the couch and I have no idea where it even is!!! The customer service is horrific!

Hmmmm...... Maybe the quality has changed over the years. I have a tv cabinet, sofa, desk and platform bed with large wooden headboard. NOTHING is hollow or laminate. The bed and sofa I've had for years and have survived two moves perfectly (a challenge for a lot of ikea furniture). The tv cabinet is small (I live in a Manhattan apt) and solid as a rock.... Very heavy. I work in marketing for an entertainment company...not West Elm, and have no reason to lie. Just surprised with all the negative comments. PS: My folks do well and I have grown up around solid quality furniture my whole life. My West Elm stuff isn't a $10k settee or $4k desk, but it's no Ikea. Nystrom on Oct 8, 2011
