Don't buy the crap copies on Bleecker Street. If you are looking for a decor gift that is evocative, unique and very graphic, there is a little (as in, world famous) shop on Centre Street that we recommend...

Ebay is also a very good source (and my top choice). Posteritati has an Ebay store, but other sellers also offer original posters for sometimes lower prices. It's not necessarily because they are cheap reproductions. Most of the time, the sellers just don't know what they are selling. Also, many times the poster is actually sold by the people who were diligent enough to ask for the poster from the theaters over the years, not sourced from other collectors who probably added their own mark-up. You just need a lot of patience until you hit that really good poster for a really good price.

Just googling titles also work well. I stumbled upon a site some time ago selling Soviet posters for 30 bucks or less. They're probably not going to be in as good condition as from this store, but if you shell the extra $100 to have it restored and framed, it's still cheaper than Posteritati.

Finally, if you're really in a tight budget and your priority is more on decorating than collecting, just get good quality reproductions. In the end, one has to realize that these are posters: they were meant to be reproduced and disposed after the event has passed. A piece of paper that is 50 years old (or even less, if you were going for the re-issued posters advertising a retrospective a few decades after the film's initial theatrical run) vs. one that was made only a few months ago really only matters to those with enough time and energy to care about stuff like that. And if one really had the time and energy to begin with, one wouldn't be asking where to find them. somedudeinvicenza on Nov 19, 2008

This is a little bit off the subject, but can anyone recommend good web resource for rock or movie posters? d-love on Nov 18, 2008
