Our folks glued huge sheets of thin cork onto a wall in our bedroom, painted it to blend in with the rest of the room, and set us free to decorate as we chose.

You could achieve a similar goal with magnetic paint and the same thin flexible plstic magnets.
Once you've done the undercoat (the mag bit) you can do a top coat of stripes or whatever.
