Speak to Spiros. Walking into Knossos Cabinetry is a like walking into many stores in New York, it is quiet, not too busy and you may need to ask for help. One wonders how the revolution in our service economy still has failed to stir the heart of our fair city. Maybe that's what The Container Store is for. Nevertheless, Knossos is a great resource for mid priced cabinetry in the Big Apple.

I was referred to Knossos by a colleague. After reading the comments here, however, I was somewhat hesitant to hire them for my job. However, my experience thus far has been positive.

On speaking with Al, the designer/draftsman in their 6th Ave store, and on hearing his prices for my items, I decided to take a chance. The prices for custom spec'd bookcases, 6-drawer double dresser and queen-sized floating platform bed with drawers underneath were lower than stock items of similar style and construction from the likes of Crate and Barrel, Room and Board, and on par with the prices for much-lower-quality products from West Elm. They were also less than half the prices quoted to me by Manhattan Cabinetry on E 59th.

Al made some rough drawings based on the measurements I gave him and my requests. I had already done a lot of shopping for furniture so I was pretty knowledgeable about the specifications that I wanted. I think this is important if you're looking to buy custom - go in knowing what you want. He quoted a 4 week lead time and asked for a 50% deposit, which he took on credit card. The following day, he faxed me more detailed drawings and asked me to approve them, which I did.

In the 4th week, I called the factory and they told me they needed an extra week. The items arrived exactly 5 weeks after I ordered them. The final payment was paid via credit card on delivery. The items are exactly as requested. The workmanship seems fine. One of the adjustable bookcase shelves was a bit too wide, but the deliveryman sanded it down to fit. None of my items required installation per se, so I cannot comment on their abilities there. They did assemble the bed on site and it seems to have been well done.

For what is probably a pretty simple job, Knossos performed admirably, producing items as requested and in a reasonable time frame. For the price, I don't think you can do much better in NYC for custom pieces. I recommend them. 55thand9th on Sep 1, 2009

Like many of the people who have commented here, my experience with Knossos was absolutely horrible. They were incompetent, unprofessional, evasive and dishonest. It was shocking. I hired them for a fairly basic installation in my home. Over the course of four months they came to my house five times to install the finished product and they screwed it up every time. On multiple occasions they delivered pieces that were measured wrong and did not fit the space. Pieces were delivered that were made out of the wrong materials and made in a design style completely different than what we had signed off on. The installation of the pieces was sloppy and insecure. I had pieces literally hanging out of the wall. There was absolutely no accountability from anybody in the company. It was as if nobody had any idea what was going on or communicated with anybody else in the company and the only answers I was given were "I don't know" and "it's not my fault." The basic feeling I got was that once these guys had your money, they could care less about actually satisfying the customer, and just did not want to bothered. There was no sense of oversight, management, or pride in a job well done. I was made to feel like an unreasonable annoyance because I was demanding what I paid for. After four months of fighting with these people I gave up because I just didn't want to take the stress and aggravation of being involved with them any longer. After their final trip to my house, they left things in a complete state of disrepair. I had to hire another carpenter to modify and reinstall the Knossos pieces and repair the damage the Knossos laborers had done to my house. I really have no idea how a company like this is still in business. west side on Feb 23, 2008
