I flew to Texas last Thanksgiving to do this for a friend over a 4 day period. I love decluttering -- but it was really traumatic for her. Towards the end I had to just walk away from it - it's probably returned back into its stuffed self. I Love Upstate on May 3, 2008

Collecting junk is an expression of the individual's sense of helplessness and their desire to control their own living space. Somehow the acquisition makes them feel more grounded.

If you wrest that control away from them, you essentially tear out the basis for their sense of self. The best case scenario then is that they work twice as hard to reaccumulate junk and regain their sense of control.

I would think that Disaster Masters should only be used to clean out deceased estates, or, very occasionally, when a severely depressed person rises out of their depression and just needs a little help to get back on track. Blandwagon on May 2, 2008
