Catalina Island may offer a myriad of options for rest and relaxation, but in terms of notable design destinations, it's literally a desert island. Touristy tschotskes and some Thomas Kinkade style artwork dominate the square mile of shops, galleries and restaurants laid across the easy-to-walk grid that makes up downtown Avalon. So when we walked in through the doors of cafe/boutique C.C. Gallagher, it came with a sigh of relief that the retailer was a tacky-free zone. s 3rd Street, catering to a discriminating crowd who prefer their shell art shaped like perfect white dalhias instead of the requisite mermaid or whale found at almost each and every other store on Catalina.
