Modern Green Living Room: Get the Look

Despite the explosion of green products on the market, it's still hard sometimes to find things that look good and meet high sustainable design standards.

Architect Michelle Kaufmann's Smart Home has been a model of good looking green design for a while now, and its most recent incarnation included an interior redesign by Midwest Living. Currently on exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, this home is a great resource for people who want to green their homes in style.

Eco-Smart Fireplace

  • 03smarthome EcoSmart : Designed by Paul Cohen in 2006, the Vision is a double-sided freestanding fireplace with an ethanol burner. It burns clean and doesn't connect to a fuel supply, so you can put it anywhere. You can purchase it through an EcoSmart retailer in your area for around $7,400.

Driftwood Candelabra

  • 02smarthome Chasing Fireflies : Manufactured by Roost, the Driftwood Candelabra is made from found driftwood that's sanded and repurposed as a centerpiece. We found one available for online order at Chasing Fireflies for $198.

Bur Oak Coffee Table

  • 08smarthome Terry Karpowicz : The coffee table is a unique piece by Chicago artist Terry Karpowicz. After a 2009 storm destroyed a historic bur oak tree, Terry and other designers used it to craft furnishings for the Smart Home exhibit. Using other wood, Terry made a twin of this coffee table, which is for sale in his West Loop studio for $3,500. For purchase information, call 312-733-6090.

Zero-VOC Paint

  • 01smarthome Benjamin Moore : The accent color used on the living room walls is Benjamin Moore's River Reflections 1552, from their Natura line of zero-VOC paints. The Natura line is waterborne and pretty much odorless, and you can order it in any color.

Soy-Based Sofas & Chair

  • 05smarthome Lee Industries : Seating includes the 8500-03 sofas and the 4217-01 chair from Lee Industries, all made with soy-based cushions, recycled fiber filling for pillows, organic fabric covers, FSC and SFI certified wood frames, and water based finishes. Shop for them through an authorized LEE retailer.

Wool Shag Rug

  • 04smarthome West Elm : The Bello Shag Rug from West Elm is 100 percent handwoven wool from New Zealand. Prices range from $140 for a small rug to $700 for a large one. It's available online or in West Elm stores.

Prairie Artwork

  • 07smarthome Long Street Collection : The large vertical artworks were loaned to SmartHome by the Long Street Collection, a company run by husband and wife team Madeline and Robert Longstreet from St. Louis, Missouri. The images depict vanishing Midwestern prairie landscapes.

Driftwood Floor Lamp

  • 06smarthome Arteriors : Made of found white driftwood, the floor lamp is manufactured by Arteriors, a lighting and design company with showrooms in High Point, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, and LA. It costs between $1,000 and $1,500—use their retail locator to find a store near you.
