Bright, Bold Home Office: Get the Look

If you haven't yet clicked through Dana's Sydney House Tour on Apartment Therapy, make sure to check it out, especially the home office. It's our favorite room in the house and, true to Dana's style, it's a combination of high and low pieces by emerging and well-known designers.

Artwork

  • 01homeoffice04142010 Vitra : Above the desk is the Bouroullec brothers' Algues for Vitra, which Icon Magazine describes as "a connective network of dendritic veins...the screen analogy of the internet age as much as Prouvé’s chairs were analogues for the early years of flight." Priced around $225 for a 50-pack, Algues can be purchased at many modern design stores.
  • 03homeoffice04142010 This is Not a Design Market : The typographic artworks are tea towels that Dana purchased at this 1-day Melbourne market. For similar pieces, try Australian company Third Drawer Down, who ship internationally, or check out this post.

Seating

  • 02homeoffice04142010 Plank : The MYTO chair, designed in 2007 by Konstantin Grcic for Italian company Plank, is a cantilevered chair made from a single piece of plastic. It's in MOMA's collection, and you can buy it for $370 at AllModern.com.
  • 04homeoffice04142010 CB2 : Dana bought the red stool from a vintage furniture shop on King Street in Newtown, Australia. CB2's painted metal Engine Barstools offer a similar look for $90 - $100.

Lighting

  • 05homeoffice04142010 Planet Furniture : The small, hive-like table lamp on Dana's desk was made by Australian ceramic artist Szilvia Gyorgy. The lamps can be purchased through design shop Planet Furniture in Sydney.

Shelving and Storage

  • 06homeoffice04142010 IKEA : The flat file cabinet under Dana's desk looks like IKEA's Alex drawer unit, a laminate-covered piece on casters.
  • 07homeoffice04142010 Vivavi : The staggered shelves look like a custom built in, but you can achieve a similar look using modular shelves. One example is Brave Space's Tetrad shelving - the configuration shown sells for $2,630 at eco-friendly retailer, Vivavi.

Desk

  • 08homeoffice04142010 Container Store : Dana's desk is a simple shelf fitted into an alcove. For a similar look, try a wall-mounted desk, like the Vitsoe (high end) or Elfa (mid-range, sold through the Container Store).

Carpet

  • 09homeoffice04142010 Flor Modular Carpet Tiles : The gray carpeting would be easy to recreate using modular, affordable FLOR tiles, like the Lamb Cord in Gotland Grey (around $7 per square foot).

Computer

  • 10homeoffice04142010 Apple Store : Dana's computer is a slim and stylish iMac. If you're looking for one, we suggest checking the Apple Outlet store online, where you can find good deals on refurbished models. (Our MacBook is a refurbished find that works great and saved us some cash.)
